RAWALPINDI (Kashmir English): The Adiala Jail Superintendent has denied allegations that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan is being kept in solitary confinement or subjected to discriminatory or unequal treatment after he completed three years in jail on Wednesday.
The report was submitted in connection with a petition concerning Imran Khan’s alleged solitary confinement.
According to the jail superintendent, the system of solitary confinement has almost ended in prisons, and Imran Khan has not been kept in solitary confinement at Adiala Jail.
The report stated that Imran Khan is serving his sentence according to the law and is being treated in accordance with the rules applicable to other prisoners.
It said some additional facilities have been provided to him because he is a better-class prisoner, a former prime minister and the head of a political party, while special security arrangements have also been made for him.
According to the report, Imran Khan is allowed to move freely during the day within a compound comprising seven cells and remains in his cell only during designated night hours. Jail officers and staff remain in contact with him regarding his needs.
The report said the Deputy Superintendent of Prisons meets Imran Khan regularly and also holds additional meetings when required. Jail doctors examine him three times a day, including checks of his blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation and other health indicators. Additional medical examinations are conducted when necessary.
A full-time convicted prisoner has also been assigned to prepare three meals a day for Imran Khan according to a menu selected by him, the report said.
The jail superintendent further stated that Imran Khan has access to natural light, fresh air and exercise from sunrise to sunset. His privacy is also maintained in accordance with the jail manual.
The authorities said that the PTI founder can move around the compound from the opening of the lock-up in the morning until it is closed in the evening and engage in activities of his choice.
“His place of detention remains under security surveillance with adequate jail staff deployed there,” the report added.
It further noted that Salman Safdar, acting as a friend of the court, inspected Imran Khan’s cell on February 10, 2026, examined his living and detention conditions and submitted his report to the Supreme Court.
The jail authorities maintained that Imran Khan’s detention and living conditions are appropriate and satisfactory and contain no element of solitary confinement. The report described allegations made by petitioner Aleema Khanum as speculative and baseless and requested that the petition be dismissed.
Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro is scheduled to hear the petition concerning Imran Khan’s alleged solitary confinement, with the jail superintendent’s response now on record.
