INGLEWOOD, USA (Kashmir English): The Iran national football team is scheduled to open its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign tonight, June 15, 2026 against New Zealand in Los Angele at 6:00 PM local time (June 16, 2026, at 6:00 AM Pakistan Standard Time).

The Group G encounter kicks off at 6:00 PM local time (PDT) at the Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) in Inglewood, California.

The game is shaped as much by events off the pitch as by the ambitions of two teams seeking a long-awaited breakthrough.

The fixture will be played against the backdrop of the US war on Iran and in a region home to the largest Iranian community outside the country.

The situation is supposed to add a charged atmosphere to a contest between two nations who have never met at the World Cup.

Iran’s participation had appeared uncertain in the buildup to the global event because of the Middle East conflict.

They also moved their base camp from Tucson, Arizona in the USA, to Tijuana, Mexico, leaving them to travel internationally for each of their three group-stage matches in the US.

Reports of progress in US-Iran peace talks have done little to ease tensions around the team, with Iranian football officials criticising FIFA after 15 members of Iran’s football federation were denied visas to travel for the tournament.

Iran at the World Cups

Iran has made 7 appearances in the FIFA World Cup, with their 2026 tournament marking their seventh overall and fourth consecutive qualification.

Historically, their most memorable World Cup result is their historic 2-1 victory over the United States in the 1998 tournament.

In 2026, they were drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand.
