JAMMU (Kashmir English): The Indian Army has conducted a special training capsule for dreaded Village Defence Groups (VDGs) in Ramban district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, further intensifying militarization in the territory under the guise of security arrangements.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the training programme was organized for VDG members from Kabbi, Gandhri, Khatter, Mughala and Bhatni villages located along the strategically important Jammu-Srinagar highway axis in Ramban district.

The Indian Army claimed that the training was aimed at enhancing local preparedness, improving coordination with Indian forces and ensuring security during the annual Amarnath Yatra.

The participants were given practical exercises on firing positions, weapon handling and fire-and-move drills.

“Heavily occupied Kashmir”

Political observers in the occupied territory said the continued arming and training of Village Defence Groups is a matter of serious concern, as such measures contribute to further militarization of civilian areas already heavily occupied by Indian troops.

They said New Delhi is using the annual pilgrimage as a pretext to tighten its grip on the territory and expand the role of armed civilian groups

Analysts said such programmes are part of broader efforts by the BJP-led Indian government to institutionalize a miltaristic approach in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, despite growing criticism from human rights organizations over increasing militarization and the involvement of civilians in armed activities.
