ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The deadline for fitting vehicles with M-Tags has been extended by 15 days, confirmed officials. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, speaking at the site of the Shaheen Chowk underpass, which has been inaugurated, said that this demand has been made by the state interior minister, who is “awami minister.”

Mr. Naqvi also updated on the Smart City Project, which is expected to be completed by 2026. The project will enable the integration of important citizen services such as the Rescue 1122 Services, Traffic Management, Security Response, and the CDA Services into a common platform.

Earlier, it was stated that vehicles not equipped with M-Tags will not be allowed into Islamabad as of January 1 to improve security measures. Additionally, ICT administration has opened 16 facilitation points and issued close to 100,000 M-Tags between the 14th of November and the 29th of December.

Vehicles not equipped with M-Tags will be traced starting January 15th through the usage of tag readers placed along entry and control points.

The M-Tag scheme, launched by the National Highways Authority (NHA) to handle the tolling of the motorways, enables the user to pay through cashless systems, use the fast lane, and pass through without queuing. The cost of each M-Tag issued in Islamabad is Rs250, and defaulters are fined.

Mr Naqvi, in his media briefing, further reiterated that the Safe City Project would be completed by 2026. He mentioned the ongoing changes brought about within the surveillance and public safety sectors, stating further that smart technology and effective safety systems are necessary for Islamabad to become a model smart and safe city.
