5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes parts of northern Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook parts of northern Pakistan early Friday morning, shaking homes across several cities and towns in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad and Kashmir.

There were, however, no immediate reports of any damage to life or property.

According to seismic monitoring centres, the quake originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 114 kilometres.

Tremors were felt in Peshawar and nearby districts, including Swat, Malakand, Dir, Mardan, Haripur, and Abbottabad besides parts of northern Pakistan and Azad Kashmir including Hazara, Lahore, Muzaffarabad, and Rawalakot.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad said the tremors were recorded at 2:03am.

The epicenter was 102 km from Bajaur Agency and it also affected Tajikistan, and Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed parts of Islamabad, and Murree accompanied by thunder and lightning, adding to the overnight weather disturbance in the region. The PDMA has advised citizens to call the helpline 1700 in case of any emergency.
