BEIJING: United States President Donald Trump has arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport in China’s capital for high-stakes talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday.

Trump is accompanied by an entourage that includes Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and Elon Musk for his two-day visit.

A red carpet was rolled out for him after Air Force One landed.

The president was to be greeted by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, China’s ambassador to Washington, Xie Feng, executive vice minister of foreign affairs, Ma Zhaoxu, and the U.S. envoy to Beijing, David Perdue, according to the White House.

The welcoming ceremony includes some 300 Chinese youths, a military honor guard, and a military band.

The state visit is the first by an American president in almost nine years.

Trump’s two days of meetings will include a grand reception at The Great Hall of the People, a tour of the UNESCO heritage site Temple of Heaven, and a state banquet.

The world is closely watching it due to an array of uncertainties and tensions overshadowing the global economy, including the stalemate over the Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Israel war on Iran, which is pushing up energy costs and even threatening global food security.
