NEW YORK (Kashmir English): US and Iranian delegations held a three-hour meeting in New York amid ongoing tensions between the two countries, with Iranian media reporting that the talks were held at Washington’s request.
According to US officials, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Trump described the meeting as positive and said it was in Iran’s interest to reach an agreement.
Iran presents conditions for Strait of Hormuz
Iranian media reported that the meeting was held at the request of the United States and focused on Tehran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
A senior Iranian official separately told Reuters that Iran could reopen the strategic waterway within seven days if the United States eases military pressure and lifts its blockade on Iranian ports. The official said Iran’s delegation in New York had full authority to pursue diplomatic negotiations.
Iran has also indicated that ending hostilities and easing US pressure would be necessary for progress toward reopening the strait.
The meeting comes as both sides remain engaged in a broader conflict, while the United Nations General Assembly has provided an opportunity for diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran.
