LONDON (Kashmir English): The UK government is set to tighten rules on smartphone use in English schools by turning existing guidance into a legal requirement, which aims to reduce student distractions while enhancing classroom order.

Education Minister Baroness Jacqui Smith told the House of Lords that an amendment will be introduced to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which will establish contact between the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill and the exportation of mobile phone usage restrictions.

The Department for Education said the move would formalise what most schools are already doing. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson had earlier urged schools to adopt phone-free policies throughout the school day.

The government now plans to give that guidance statutory force, which will require schools to follow. The policies of the two parties about school operations diverge from each other because the Conservative proposals want to create a total legal prohibition.

Conservative shadow education secretary Laura Trott supported the initiative because he believed it would benefit students and their parents, and teachers. He said it would help schools achieve better student behavior and academic performance.

Baroness Smith explained that the government will require schools to enforce the previously optional rule, which prevents students from using their phones outside of their bags.

The government is now testing different security options. Some schools already use lockers or sealed pouches for phone storage. The government has not yet released the full details of the amendment.

Opposition parties also responded. The Liberal Democrats urged ministers to ensure schools receive adequate funding and support for implementation. Education spokesperson Caroline Voaden declared that the new funding system would benefit schools and their staff members while students derive major advantages from it.

Reform UK declared that smartphones create disciplinary issues that disrupt school operations. Education spokesperson Suella Braverman from the organization demanded a comprehensive prohibition that schools must strictly implement. The Green Party raises.
