BASEL, Switzerland (Kashmir English): Eating tomatoes regularly may help reduce accumulation of fat and support liver’s health, according to a recent research published in the medical journal Nutrients.

The research, also involving Italian health authorities, examined the potential health effects of regular tomato consumption, with particular attention to liver health and metabolic function.

According to experts, tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that has been studied for its potential protective effects on cells.

Researchers found that regular tomato consumption was associated with lower levels of fat accumulation in the liver. Lycopene may also help protect liver cells against oxidative stress and support the body’s metabolic processes.

The findings further suggest that compounds found in tomatoes may have anti-inflammatory effects, potentially supporting overall liver function.

Tomato, an easy addition to the diet

Tomatoes can be consumed raw in salads and can also be added to cooked meals, making them an accessible addition to a balanced diet.

However, experts are of the opinion that eating tomatoes alone should not be considered a treatment or guaranteed way to prevent fatty liver disease.

Maintaining a healthy weight and regular exercise besides a balanced diet remain important for reducing the risk of liver-related metabolic conditions.

Fatty liver disease can develop without obvious symptoms, making lifestyle choices and regular medical check-ups particularly important for people at higher risk.

The study adds to growing research into how everyday foods and their naturally occurring compounds may contribute to better liver and metabolic health.
