KARACHI (Kashmir English): Sindh government laboratory has declared seven batches of six medicines fake after the tests found that samples lacked their stated active ingredients.
According to laboratory reports, the affected medicines include Velosef, Augmentin, No-Spa Forte, Mycon Suspension and Brexin. Samples of the widely used laxative syrup Laxoberon were also found to be fake.
The report found that batch LX3A of Velosef 500mg contained no active ingredient. Batch YT9D of Augmentin 526mg was also declared fake. Specific batches of No-Spa Forte and Mycon Suspension failed to meet laboratory standards.
A sample of batch W6BC of Brexin, a medicine used to treat joint pain, was also declared fake. Two batches of Laxoberon syrup, numbered 46292 and 43445, were likewise found to be fake.
The laboratory reports stated that the Laxoberon syrup samples contained no sodium picosulphate, the active ingredient used in the laxative.
No one owned fake medicines
Interestingly, Martin Dow Marker disowned the ‘fake’ batches, while the other manufacturers also denied that the specific batches had been produced by them.
The findings have prompted recommendations for action under the Drugs Act 1976.
The government laboratory has sent its reports to the secretary of the Sindh Quality Control Board.
The reports have also been forwarded to the drug inspector for Karachi South for further action.
