No breakthrough in US-Iran talks as key disputes remain unresolved

WASHINGTON (Kashmir English): No significant progress has been made in the ongoing indirect talks between the US and Iran mediated by Qatar; both sides remain entrenched in their respective positions on key issues, causing diplomatic efforts to stall.

According to reports, Qatari mediator Ali Al-Thawadi held hours of talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New York, yet the discussions failed to yield any definitive breakthrough. Sources familiar with the talks indicated that neither the US nor Iran appeared willing to alter their fundamental stances.

Key issues under discussion included the Strait of Hormuz, the US naval blockade, sanctions imposed on Iran, and the Iranian nuclear program. Iran is pressing its demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz and sanctions, while Washington seeks concessions from Iran concerning its nuclear program.

In a previous proposal, Iran had offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear negotiations—contingent upon measures such as easing the US naval blockade and lifting restrictions on oil sales—but US President Donald Trump rejected the proposal.

Despite this, regional mediators, including Qatar, continue their efforts to maintain contact between the two nations and work toward a potential agreement.

Trump has also expressed an expectation for further talks, while the Iranian Foreign Minister has signaled a willingness to negotiate for a diplomatic solution.
