ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Tuesday issued an alert, warning of floods and landslides across northern regions of the country.

According to a NDMA spokesperson, threat of landslides and flood remains for the period from June 16 to 22, with risk areas identified in northern parts of the country.

The authority said that landslides are likely in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa during the forecast period.

Furthermore, it said that stones, rocks and debris may descend from hilly terrain into low-lying areas.

Several major highways, including the Karakoram Highway, may be affected by landslides, the NDMA warned.

Jaglot, Skardu, Shigar and Hussainabad, among other areas have been identified as sensitive zones.

In Azad Kashmir, landslide risk remains in Muzaffarabad, Kel, Sharda and surrounding regions.

Areas including Chitral, Kohistan, Abbottabad and Lohar Gali also face the possibility of landslides.

Flood risk has been highlighted across Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir and Balochistan.

NDMA warning

The NDMA also warned of strong winds, thunderstorms, rain and hail across several parts of the country.

In Islamabad, Punjab and multiple districts, rain with strong winds is expected, while similar conditions are forecast in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.

Balochistan and Sindh may also experience windstorms and rainfall, according to the NDMA.

It further said that rising temperatures and rainfall may trigger flood-like situations adding that melting glaciers and possible glacial lake outburst floods may cause rising water levels in rivers and streams.

An alert has been issued for potential GLOF incidents in areas including Hassanabad, Shisper, Passu, Nagar and Skardu.

Road links may face disruption due to landslides, the authority said.

All relevant institutions have been directed to remain on high alert.

Tourists have also been advised to check weather and road conditions before travelling.

Meanwhile, Rajanpur and surrounding areas remained under the influence of strong winds and heavy rain spells.

In the Koh-e-Suleman range, fresh rainfall raised fears of flooding in streams and seasonal nullahs.
