National Women’s T20 cricket tournament starts on May 7 in Karachi

KARACHI (Kashmir English): The National Women’s T20 Tournament 2025 will begin on May 7 (Wednesday) at two Karachi venues, the National Stadium and HPC Oval Ground, the Pakistan Cricket Board said on Saturday.

A total of five teams will vie for this year’s title the campaign for which will start on May 7.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in a press statement said, “The five-team National Women’s T20 Tournament 2024-25 will begin on May 7 at two venues in Karachi”.

The PCB further said that this year’s edition will feature five teams — Challengers, Conquerors, Invincibles, Stars, and Strikers.

Competing in a double-league format, each side will play eight matches with a total of 22 matches scheduled to take place across 18 days.

Last month, Pakistan finished the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 Qualifiers unbeaten with a dominating victory over Bangladesh by seven wickets in Lahore.

Pakistan have already reserved their berth for the World Cup to be held in India later this year.

The country will host the event from September 29 to October 26, with Australia the defending champions.

Women’s T20 tournament

Two teams, finishing second and third on the points table, will face off in a qualifier on May 22, with the winner advancing to meet the top team in the final to be played at the National Stadium Karachi on May 24. All matches in the tournament will begin at 3pm.

A total of 80 female cricketers will be part of the tournament, which carries a prize pool of over Rs3 million.

The champions will take home Rs1.5 million, while the runners-up will get Rs1 million, according to the PCB.

The 19-member squads of each of the five teams will be shortened to 16 at the end of the four-day pre-tournament camp, which began on Saturday (May 3) in Karachi.

Last year’s tournament was held in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with Karachi and Lahore being declared joint winners of the tournament after the final at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was washed out without a ball being bowled.
