MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Acting President Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate, Chaudhry Latif Akbar, on Tuesday challenged the Election Commission’s order regarding the election result of LA-31 Muzaffarabad-V (Khawra) before the Supreme Court of AJK.
In the second phase of the election in the region, PML-N candidate Saqib Majeed Raja emerged victorious with 32,511 votes, defeating PPP candidate Chaudhry Latif Akbar, who secured 23,957 votes from the LA-31 constituency, the Election Commission said.
However, Speaker AJK Legislative Assembly rejected the results, alleging rigging during the polling. He added that 19,000 one-sided votes were cast in favor of the PML-N candidate.
Addressing a press conference on August 4, Latif Akbar said that an application has been filed to the AJK Election Commission seeking re-polling at 45 polling stations in LA-31.
After the regional electoral watchdog dismissed his appeal on August 3, the acting President has moved to the apex court, seeking to declare the impugned Election Commission order and related notification void, arguing that the decisions are contrary to the law, facts, and record.
“The Election Commission’s order dated August 4, 2026, the election result announced on August 3, and the notification issued on August 5 have been challenged to the extent of the relevant entry,” the appeal, filed through Supreme Court Advocate Chaudhry Shaukat Aziz, stated.
The appellant prayed to the Supreme Court to grant the relief sought in his application dated August 3 in the “interest of justice.”
