New JIT formed in Khuiratta’s Tasmia Sohail murder case

KOTLI (Kashmir English): The Azad Kashmir Home Department has formed a new Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to conduct an impartial re-investigation into the Tasmia Sohail murder case following public demands and sit-ins in Khuiratta.

According to the notification issued on Wednesday, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Muhammad Yasin Qureshi will chair the JIT. Other members include SSP Muzaffarabad Riaz Haider Bukhari, DSP Akmal Sharif (Member Secretary), a representative of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and ISI.

As per details, the team will be allowed to co-opt officers from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and a representative of Military Intelligence (MI) for technical assistance.

The JIT has been tasked to ensure the safe delivery and analysis of forensic samples and to submit its report within 10 days.

The previous JIT notification issued on September 26, 2025, has been cancelled. Officials have stressed that all measures will be taken to ensure a fair, transparent, and timely investigation into the case.

According to police, an accused named Mumtaz Shah was arrested from Faisalabad on August 3, four days after a report emerged about the disappearance of Tasmia from Saidpur Pilan in Khuiratta. The young girl’s body was discovered in the fields, and an accused was arrested and later confessed to the crime.
