WEBDESK: Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated further as Mehrabad Airport in Tehran was struck by an Israeli airstrike, according to reports from Iranian media. The airstrike specifically targeted a fighter jet hangar located at the airport but left the runways and main aviation operations untouched.
The event took place against the background of the current series of tensions between the two nations, and the Mehrabad Airport was the new center of interest in the selective military operation by Israel. The facility, which was attacked, is one of the most important airports in Iran because it is both a civilian and military airport, and such an attack is particularly noteworthy.
“The attacks caused explosions at the airport but did not affect any runways, buildings or facilities,” IRNA reported.
Officials confirmed that while the hangar was hit, there was no major damage to the airport’s infrastructure, such as its runways or terminals. Flights and civilian operations at Mehrabad Airport were reported to be unaffected after the attack.
The strike marks a new development in ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel, with both countries remaining on high alert.
The Israeli government has not issued a formal statement on the strike, but it follows a series of reported Israeli operations aimed at limiting Iran’s military capabilities. Recent weeks have seen strikes on various military and nuclear-related sites across Tehran and other parts of Iran.
On Friday, June 13, 2025, Israel launched a series of airstrikes under the operation named “Operation Rising Lion.” The mission was aimed at severely damaging Iran’s nuclear capabilities and weakening its military infrastructure.
Those killed include Major General Hossein Salami, the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), along with well-known nuclear scientists Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani.
Military analysts warn that further attacks could disrupt not only regional stability but also air travel and security operations tied to key infrastructure like Mehrabad Airport.
