LAHORE (Kashmir English): India has again released water from Salal Dam for the eleventh consecutive time, that may indirectly contribute to flooding in the lower parts of the Indus River.
The release is likely to cause flood in Sehwan villages along Indus River.
A flood alert has been issued in the country after the release of water from Salal Dam. A wave of approximately 90,000 cusecs of water from India is expected to reach Pakistan.
Water flow from Indian side
Water flow in most rivers of the country is normal, however, low and medium-level flood situations persist at various points of Indus River, while an increase in water levels has also been recorded in Tarbela and Mangla dams.
Medium-level flooding persists at Sukkur Barrage in Indus River, while low-level flood conditions exist at Kalabagh, Chashma and Guddu Barrage, low-level flooding has also been recorded at Head Balloki in Ravi River.
On the other hand, water flow at most key points of Jhelum, Chenab, Sutlej, Ravi and Kabul rivers is normal, a decrease in water flow was recorded at Chachran Sharif and Benazir Bridge, where discharge remained 218,978 cusecs.
Water level in Tarbela Dam has increased to 1,539 feet and the dam is 89% full, which is equal to last year, while water level in Mangla Dam has exceeded 1,196 feet, and the dam is 57% full.
Relevant institutions are keeping a close watch on the situation of rivers and low-lying areas and have directed district administrations and rescue agencies to remain alert.
