KARACHI (Kashmir English): The nationwide strike by goods transporters has entered its eighth consecutive day, with the government and transporters set to hold important negotiations in Karachi today.
President of the All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance Malik Shahzad Awan said the peaceful strike would continue until the transporters’ demands are formally accepted. However, he said a channel for negotiations with the government has now been opened.
According to Malik Shahzad Awan, a key meeting will be held today at Governor House Karachi, where representatives of the federal and provincial governments will participate.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar, Governor Sindh, Sindh Transport Minister, and other government officials are expected to attend.
Malik Shahzad Awan expressed hope that the issues facing transporters would be resolved through negotiations and that the wheels of goods transportation would soon start moving across the country.
He appealed to transporters to remain peaceful during the protest, saying there was hope that the talks would produce positive news.
The transporters’ alliance president, however, stressed that the government would have to take practical decisions rather than merely offering assurances. He made it clear that the nationwide strike would continue until their demands are formally approved.
