ISLAMABAD (KASHMIR ENGLISH):  Electricity prices in Pakistan have been increased by Rs1.11 per unit under the fuel price adjustment for August, putting an additional financial burden on consumers across the country.

According to a notification issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the increase will remain effective for one month and will be recovered from consumers through their October electricity bills.

The additional charges will apply to consumers across the country, including those in Karachi, under the August fuel price adjustment mechanism.

Sources said the latest adjustment is expected to place an additional financial burden of around Rs19 billion on electricity consumers.

However, the increase will not apply to lifeline consumers, who have been exempted from the additional charges.

The latest adjustment comes as electricity prices continue to be revised periodically based on changes in fuel costs and other factors under the fuel price adjustment mechanism.

Nepra introduces major relief for small solar users

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has amended the Solar Regulations 2026, introducing a major relief for small solar users.

According to a notification issued by Nepra, solar prosumers installing systems below 25 kilowatts (kW) will no longer be required to obtain prior approval from the authority.

Under the revised regulations, the relevant electricity distribution company (DISCO) will have authority to grant approvals directly.

Officials said that the amendment adds the word “approval” to the regulations along with permission. The amendments make certain requirements conditional on their applicability.

The changes are aimed at shifting decision-making to the distribution company level, reducing procedural delays and facilitating easier adoption of distributed power generation.

Nepra officials added that the amendment aims to help Pakistan transition to clean energy. The move will promote rooftop solar systems and other small-scale renewable energy.
