MULTAN (Kashmir English): On Thursday, top police officials in Multan directed school and college students to get motorcycle licenses and helmets within one week.
City Police Officer Sadiq Dogar and Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Kashif Aslam issued the order during a press conference as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had forbidden the arrest of underage students on account of traffic violations.
Announcing this, CPO Sadiq Dogar said police launched an awareness campaign to help students avoid violations under the revised traffic rules. He said the department has extended operating hours at traffic centers to allow applicants to obtain licenses late into the evening.
He further said the police want students to fulfill the new requirements without unnecessary difficulty. CTO Kashif Aslam said the government has amended the traffic laws and enhanced penalties for violations.
He called on the citizens to follow the rules strictly in order to avoid fines and other legal issues. He said the campaign is “aimed at guiding young riders towards safer behaviour on the road.”
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz earlier banned the police from arresting minors for traffic violations after some videos surfaced showing police handcuffing young students. She expressed strong displeasure over the treatment of children and urged parents to play a responsible role in teaching traffic discipline.
