RAWALAKOT (Kashmir English): Commissioner Poonch Division Masood-ur-Rehman and Deputy Inspector General of Police Region Sardar Zaheer Ahmed visited the newly-constructed building of District Jail Rawalakot.

Deputy Commissioner Poonch Mumtaz Kazmi, Superintendent of Police Poonch Khurram Iqbal and other officials were also with them.

Commissioner Poonch gets briefing

Deputy Superintendent of Construction Building Division Rizwan Azad gave a briefing on the construction of the building and the remaining work.

Commissioner Poonch Division Masood-ur-Rehman said that the required funds have been provided for the construction of the jail building.

He directed that the remaining work of the jail building should be completed by the coming June and the jail prisoners should be shifted to the new building.

He said that all the facilities should be provided to the prisoners in the newly-constructed building.

Later, Commissioner Poonch also visited the present building of the district jail and reviewed the facilities provided to prisoners.

On June 30 last year, around 19 prisoners escaped the Poonch district jail with one of the prison breakers said to have later died in hospital.

Six death-row prisoners were among the escapees. In a subsequent action, eight jail officials were detained and AJK home secretary was removed.

The incident was termed a major security breach in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The thirty-year-old prison located adjacent to the city’s district courts in the heart of the town has been in a dilapidated state for quite some time, whereas work on the new prison site on the outskirts of the town was in progress.
