AJK requests 16,800 additional police from centre, provinces

MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The Azad Jammu and Kashmir government has sought 16,800 additional police personnel from the Federal Ministry of Interior for the conduct of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections.

The personnel sought include 14,000 from Punjab Police (PHP 5,000, RMP 3,000, Punjab Constabulary 900, District Police 5,100), Sindh Police 2,000, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 500, Balochistan 200 and Gilgit-Baltistan 100 personnel.

The additional personnel will be deployed in a phased manner to maintain law and order at sensitive polling stations, important locations and in critical areas.

The elections, which will begin on July 27, will be completed in three phases on August 10.

To ensure peaceful, transparent and secure conduct of the elections in these three phases, the Azad Kashmir government has made a new request to the federal Ministry of Interior for the provision of police personnel.

On the instructions of the Ministry of Interior, personnel will be provided from the police forces of the provinces.

Total personnel from Punjab: 14,000 personnel

Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP): 5,000 personnel
Riot Management Police (RMP): 3,000 personnel
Punjab Constabulary (PC): 900 personnel
Punjab District Police: 5,100 personnel

Personnel sent from other provinces to AJK

Sindh Police: 2,000 personnel
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police: 500 personnel
Balochistan Police: 200 personnel

Gilgit-Baltistan Police: 100 personnel

Sources in the Interior Ministry said that this additional personnel will be used for the security of polling stations, sensitive places during the elections and will also be deployed to maintain law and order in cities.

The deployment of personnel will be completed in phases as per the instructions of the Azad Kashmir authorities.
