MUZAFFRABAD (Kashmir English): In a tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Asif Ali Awan Shaheed, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to rename the Girls High School Tetran Panjkot after the brave soldier.
The notification to rename the school was issued after the approval of the President of Azad Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry.
Lieutenant Colonel Asif Ali Awan Shaheed, a resident of Union Council Panjkot of Lachhrat constituency of the capital Muzaffarabad, was martyred in a helicopter crash in 2022 during a peacekeeping mission in Congo.
He was one of six Pakistan Army officers who died in a helicopter accident. The martyr lived in Union Council Panjkot in Muzaffarabad and has a family, including his brother-in-law, PPP Azad Kashmir Secretary General Faisal Mumtaz Rathore.
In honor of his gallantry, courage, and loyalty to duty, Lieutenant Colonel Asif Ali Awan Shaheed was awarded the Medal of Bravery (posthumous) by the Pakistan Army.
Earlier, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government had named various institutions and roads across the state after eminent personalities.
According to the notification, President Azad Kashmir approved the recommendation of the AJK Cabinet made in the meeting of the AJK Meritorious Services Acknowledgement Committee held on February 20, 2024, and January 28, 2025.
Under this decision, various educational institutions, roads and government buildings have been named after eminent personalities.
As per the notification, the Government High School in District Muzaffarabad has been named after the late Raja Munir Khan, while Dhangali to Dadial Road in Mirpur district has been named after the late Chaudhry Muhammad Yousaf (former senior government minister).
Hari Gehal Shujaabad Road in Bagh district has been named after the late Syed Zameer Hussain Shah, former Principal of Boys Postgraduate College Bagh.
In addition to that, the Basic Health Unit in Tehsil Barnala, Bhimber district has been named after the late Raja Habibullah Khan, and the Children’s Ward (Pediatrics) in CMH Muzaffarabad has been named after Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah.
This initiative has been taken by the Government of Azad Kashmir to pay tribute to the services of these eminent personalities.
