NEW DELHI (Kashmir English): India Ladakh’s renowned educationist and social activist Sonam Wangchuck has been released after a long six-month imprisonment.

According to details, Wangchuck was arrested under the controversial “National Security Act” while demanding constitutional protections and rights for Ladakh.

The arrest of Sonam Wangchuck, who is known worldwide for her innovative thinking and educational services, has raised serious questions about human rights in and outside India. Critics say that a patriotic citizen like Wangchuck was punished only because he dared to question New Delhi’s policies.

Demand for constitutional rights and state repression

Sonam Wangchuck was peacefully struggling to include Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and protect the rights of the local population. However, the Indian government, considering his democratic demand as a threat to the state, imposed strict laws on him and put him behind bars.

India’s tendency to suppress dissent

According to analysts, Wangchuck’s six-month imprisonment exposes the harsh reality that there is no place for dissent in today’s India. Even those who are considered to be the country’s benefactors, if they raise their voice against the decisions of the central government, are crushed with the full force of the state.
