Tarique Rahman set to take oath as new PM of Bangladesh today

DHAKA (Kashmir English): Tarique Rahman, the eldest son of late former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and late President Ziaur Rahman, will take oath as new PM of Bangladesh today (Tuesday).

The swearing-in ceremony for the new cabinet, led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is scheduled at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building.

Rahman is set to become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh following a landslide victory by his party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in the February 12, 2026 general elections.

Acting Chairman Bangladesh Nationalist Party

He returned to the country in late 2025 after 17 years of self-imposed exile in London. He is currently the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Furthermore, Pakistan Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal will attend the oath taking. He will travel to Dhaka, represent the Government and people of Pakistan at the event, confirmed a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

According to a post on X by the Foreign Office, the new premier of Bangladesh, Tarique Rahman of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP), will take the oath on February 17 in Dhaka.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was invited to the ceremony, but he will not be able to participate due to his official visit to Austria. In his place, Iqbal will travel to Dhaka and represent the Government.

“Pakistan’s participation in the ceremony reflects its support for Bangladesh’s democratic process and underscores its commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries, ” the FO statement said.
