Why do earthquakes occur?

An earthquake occurs due to the sudden release of energy from the Earth’s crust, which often appears on the Earth’s surface in the form of volcanic lava.

More than 80% of the world’s earthquakes occur along the Pacific Rim, known as the Ring of Fire. This is because there is a lot of volcanic activity inside the Earth there.

In addition, most earthquakes occur in fault zones, where tectonic plates collide or rub against each other. Tectonic plates are the rocky slabs that make up the Earth’s outer layer.
