NEW YORK (Kashmir English): The newly elected Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, has been the main character of social media for the last few days, with hundreds of posts and videos being shared online.
A video of New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has gone viral on social media, where he is seen quoting former Pakistan cricket captain and commentator Ramiz Raja in a campaign address.
As Mamdani exhorted his supporters to stay active and not take the victory for granted, he stated, “In the words of Ramiz Raja: the ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory,” as he drew laughter and applause from the crowd.
The quote is instantly recognizable to cricket enthusiasts in South Asia and was used here to drive home the need to keep pushing at the tail end of the election.
Ramiz Raja’s Response
In response, Former Pakistani captain Ramiz Raja himself praised Mamdani. In his tweet published on his official X account, Ramiz Raja wrote ” Many congratulations, Mr Mamdani, and thank you for being a commentary enthusiast! You played with a straight bat and exposed the ones who “were not playing cricket,” so proud of you.”

Social media users also praised Mamdani for his unlikely yet highly apt reference, with the clip being shared widely across all platforms and people giving it a positive response.
Mamdani is known for his grassroots political style and cultural inclusivity; he has just won the election and is set to take office.
Earlier, Zohran Mamdani won the elections for New York’s new mayor. The Associated Press called the race for Mamdani late Tuesday, shortly after polls closed, ending months of intense campaigning in America’s largest city.
His victory represents a generational and ideological shift in U.S. politics, contrasting sharply with the establishment politics embodied by his opponent, Andrew Cuomo.
Mamdani’s focus on working-class issues, housing affordability, and social equity resonated deeply with voters. Supporters gathered at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre on election night to celebrate what many called a transformative moment for New York’s 8.4 million residents.
