ASTORE, Pakistan (Kashmir English): In Astore district of Gilgit-Baltistan, a person was sentenced to one year in prison for illegal hunting of Markhor.
According to the District Forest Officer, the accused had illegally hunted a Markhor in Doya Union two days ago.
The person was sentenced to one year in prison for illegal hunting of Markhor, while he was also fined Rs50.7 million as compensation for the Markhor and Rs2000 as a penalty.
If the compensation is not paid, the accused will have to serve an additional one year in prison.
According to the DFO, another operation was carried out near the Divian check post where the smuggling of 5 maunds of valuable herbs was foiled. One accused was arrested and the herbs along with the vehicle were seized.
The accused was sentenced to 15 days in prison and fined Rs50,000.

It is worth noting that Markhor trophy hunting worth millions of rupees is carried out every year in Gilgit-Baltistan. This year, a permit for Markhor hunting in Gilgit-Baltistan was auctioned for 370,000 dollars (approximately 105 million Pakistani rupees).
