DURHAM (Kashmir English): England fast bowler Jofra Archer is all set to make a long-awaited return to red-ball cricket after more than four years on the sidelines. He has been named in Sussex’s squad for their County Championship match in Durham, marking a crucial step in his journey back to the national Test team.

Jofra Archer, who last played first-class cricket in May 2021, has faced multiple injuries that kept him out of action, including stress fractures and elbow surgery. While he made limited appearances in T20 and ODI formats, this marks his first serious outing in the longer format since his long injury layoff.

Selectors and fans alike are hopeful that Jofra Archer can prove his fitness and form in the upcoming match. If successful, he could be in contention for a place in England’s squad for the second Test against India, set to begin on July 2 at Edgbaston.

Luke Wright, England’s national selector, confirmed that Archer’s return is part of a carefully managed plan. “He’s worked incredibly hard and is now ready to test himself in red-ball cricket again. This match will help us assess his readiness for Test selection,” Wright said.

The 30-year-old has been out of action since 2021 due to an issue with his right elbow.

Jofra Archer has not played any red-ball cricket since a County Championship match for Sussex against Kent in May 2021.

Earlier this month, England Test captain Ben Stokes revealed that the pacer had asked him about the possibility of him playing in the Test against Zimbabwe.

However, he missed being part of the squad for reasons unknown.
