MUZAFFARABAD: In Azad Kashmir’s capital city, a young girl lost her life, and another was injured in wild boar attacks, creating widespread fear among residents, making it difficult for them to step outside. However, no practical measures have been taken by the municipality or the Wildlife Department to ensure citizens’ safety.
Previously, boars were also spotted at night in Muzaffarabad’s upscale areas like Chahla Bandi and Madina Market. The presence of boars in the city began to be noticed early last year. A motorcyclist was also injured in a recent wild boar attack.
The growing number of wild boars has been discussed in the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly, leading to the formation of a committee tasked with recommending solutions for the eradication of boars. During a prior debate in the Legislative Assembly, a member suggested either killing the boars or exporting them to generate foreign exchange.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly and a member of this committee, Khawaja Farooq Ahmed, stated that the committee will review every aspect of how to eliminate the boars. He emphasised that the goal is not to earn foreign exchange but to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives and property.
Khawaja Farooq, a member of the Legislative Assembly from Muzaffarabad, highlighted that wild boars are causing damage in both rural and urban areas. In villages, they destroy crops, while in cities, they pose a threat to human lives.
It is worth noting that last July, the Agriculture Department conducted an operation to eliminate wild boars in Dheerkot, during which 14 boars were killed. A press release issued at the time provided these details.
