ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): YouTubers, TikTokers and Instagrammers earning income from social media platforms have now come under the scrutiny of tax authorities.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced plans to devise a mechanism to bring income generated from social media into the tax net.

According to the FBR, individuals earning income from various social media platforms—including YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram will be brought within the tax ambit; regular income tax will apply to earnings derived from social media.

A notification issued by the FBR outlines the procedure for incorporating income from social media content into the tax system; the initiative aims to bring income generated through digital channels under the existing tax framework.

The notification states that a special tax collection mechanism will be formulated for individuals earning income from social media. Specific rules will be established to integrate earnings from these various platforms into the tax system.

Individuals generating income through YouTube videos, content on Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok will also face tax liabilities under this new procedure.

According to the FBR, the rapid expansion of the digital economy necessitates the inclusion of social media-generated income in the tax system. The new rules aim to document income from this sector and streamline the tax collection process.

Following this development, individuals earning income by creating social media content will need to address their tax obligations, while further details regarding the final implementation of the new rules are also expected to emerge.
