WhatsApp launches AI tool for profile, group pictures

CALIFORNIA (Kashmir English): WhatsApp has begun the rollout of an AI-generated profile picture and group icon feature as part of the latest iOS update, with through its TestFlight beta program, and which comes in version 25.16.10.70.

The AI-generated image tool is being provided officially to selected testers for an initial test, subject to expected extended rollout. Users can quickly generate appropriate images by typing any prompt in a sentence that describes the image they want.

Instead of standard pictures with real pictures, this feature is producing completely new images from scratch, and helps users to communicate their personal, or current mood more creatively.

Users can create profiles, artwork, or group icons for themed events completely without having to upload pictures of their own.

To use the feature, users can go into settings, select the profile photo option, and there is a prompt to create an AI-generated image. Users can follow a similar process to create and edit group icons directly with their group’s info menu.

There have been growing privacy concerns, so giving users at least some more creative freedom to use makes sense to give users an alternative usage other than actual pictures shared through other means.

The feature also provides a useful way to enhance profile images for users who do not have appropriate imagery to put on their profile images.

Although the feature is available for beta testers first, some users are on the stable iOS version of WhatsApp, and have provided screenshots that show the option, meaning the feature could be rolled out in the future to those beyond the beta testing group and into the wider group of active users for WhatsApp.
