ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for flooding and inundation in rivers and canals in view of heavy monsoon rains till July 24.
According to the NDMA, there is a high risk of flooding in various areas of Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Punjab.
According to the alert, flooding is likely in the rivers and canals of Bagh, Haveli, Poonch, Sidhnoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. On the other hand, there is a possibility of an increase in water flow in the rivers and canals of Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Gilgit, Diamer, Ganchhe and Shigar districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, while the water level may also rise in the rivers of Astore, Kharmang and Rondo.
Weather update for KP, Punjab and Balochistan
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, high flow and rain showers have been forecast in Chitral, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Peshawar, Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, Kohat, Bannu, Hangu, North and South Waziristan, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan.
According to the NDMA, there is a possibility of an increase in water flow in the mountain rain drains of DG Khan and Rajanpur in Punjab, while there is a risk of flooding in Zhob, Sherani, Musakhel, Loralai, Qila Saifullah, Ziarat, Daki, Barkhan, Harnai, Sibi, Kachhi, Khuzdar, Lahri and Jhal Magsi in Balochistan.
Regarding the situation of rivers, the NDMA said that high-level flooding is likely at the Chenab River Marala, while moderate flooding is likely in the upper reaches of the Jhelum River Mangla.
In addition, a significant increase in water flow is expected in several drains of the Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi basins. According to the NDMA, low-level flooding is likely at the Ravi River Baloki during the next 24 to 48 hours, while the water level may also rise in the Swat, Panjkora, Chitral, Kabul and their tributaries.
Public instructions
The NDMA has directed the public to avoid unnecessary travel to sensitive places and mountainous areas and has directed the relevant agencies to ensure continuous monitoring of sensitive places, preparation of emergency teams and immediate restoration of potentially closed highways.
The public has been directed to use the official NDMA app Pak NDMA Disaster Alert for timely information regarding the weather situation.
Overall, this alert issued by the NDMA regarding various rivers, streams, and rain gutters across the country has been brought forward as part of measures to deal with possible flood-related dangerous situations and keep the public safe.
