DERA ISMAIL KHAN (Kashmir English): Another terrorist attack was reported in Dera Ismail Khan as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is busy expanding its political role in police administration to over-control the force while completely ignoring the renewed terrorism in the province.
According to sources, a suicide bomber with a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) targeted the Aman Mela police checkpoint in Darazinda, Dera Ismail Khan, on Saturday, with possible civilian casualties.
Law enforcement personnel and rescue officials were dispatched to the area following the explosion, while further details regarding casualties and the extent of damage were awaited.
The attack came when the provincial government and senior police officials established a difference over the proposed KP Police Act 2026, while the province is being pushed into chaos and violence.
On September 23, the provincial cabinet approved the KP Police Act, 2026, draft, aimed at changing the province’s police command, policymaking, appointments, transfers, recruitment and administrative structure.
The law will link the police chief’s operational, administrative and financial decisions to the approval of the provincial government or the chief minister for implementation.
Senior police officials, however, have raised concerns over provisions dealing with appointments, transfers, postings, and the command structure, arguing that some changes could increase political interference and affect the professional autonomy of the force.
