LAHORE (Kashmir English): Section 144 has been imposed across Punjab, completely banning the assembly, procession, or gathering of five or more people in public places, on highways, or in open spaces throughout the province.
A complete ban has also been imposed on carrying or displaying any type of weapon in public places, as well as on inciting or encouraging people to participate in illegal gatherings; however, this ban does not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, or activities at mosques and other places of worship.
Courts, government institutions, and events held with official permission are exempt from the ban, and it does not apply to law enforcement personnel, intelligence agency staff, or security officials on duty. The imposition of Section 144 across Punjab is effective from October 6 to October 15.
This measure was taken in view of serious threats to public peace, order, and the safety of life and property, following reports of imminent threats received from law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
Intelligence reports indicate that terrorist organizations are planning to target public gatherings; rallies, public meetings, sit-ins, processions, and demonstrations could become easy targets for terrorist attacks.
Law enforcement agencies requested assistance in implementing immediate security measures to counter these potential terrorist threats.
The Home Secretary has imposed an immediate ban on public gatherings under Section 144 (6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.
A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department stated that protecting the lives and property of the public is the Punjab government’s top priority, and the department has issued a notification for the immediate enforcement of Section 144.
