Schedule for AJK general elections likely in first week of June

MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission has announced that the schedule for the upcoming general elections is expected in the first week of June.

A press release issued by the spokesperson of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Election Commission said that, according to the Constitution of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, holding general elections within 60 days before the expiry of the constitutional term of the Legislative Assembly is a mandatory constitutional requirement.

“The first session of the current Legislative Assembly was held on August 3, which forms the basis for determining the constitutional term of the assembly.”

The press release further stated that, in accordance with constitutional and legal requirements, the election schedule must be issued at least 45 days before the end of the assembly’s term to ensure that the electoral process is completed in a timely and organized manner.

“Considering these constitutional requirements, the schedule for the upcoming general elections is expected in the first week of June, after which electoral activities will officially commence.”

“Free, fair, and impartial elections”

The press release further stated that the Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir is completing all necessary arrangements for holding transparent, free, fair, and impartial elections.

In this regard, communication and consultation with relevant institutions are ongoing to ensure that the electoral process is completed smoothly in accordance with the Constitution and law.
