TORONTO (Kashmir English): Portugal defeated Croatia 2:1 in a dramatic Round of 32 knockout clash during the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Toronto Stadium.
Portugal dominated possession (62%) and created several major chances but Croatia’s goalkeeper Dominik Livaković made key early saves to keep the score 0-0 at halftime. The goalkeeper notably stopped a low driving shot from Bruno Fernandes.
The match exploded into life in the 53rd minute when Josip Stanišić of Croatia clipped a precise cross from the right flank that found an unmarked Ivan Perišić at the back post, who volleyed it past Diogo Costa with his left foot.
In the 68th minute, Portugal was awarded a penalty after a VAR review showed Nikola Vlašić dragging down Renato Veiga in the box.
Ronaldo fired the spot-kick straight down the middle to tie the game.
This marked Ronaldo’s first-ever career knockout stage goal at a FIFA World Cup. He was substituted out shortly after in the 81st minute.
Just as the game looked headed for extra time, super-sub Gonçalo Ramos powered home a brilliant header to seal the 2-1 victory for Portugal.
