INDORE, India (Kashmir English): A disabled man in Indore, India, known as Mangi Lal, has been exposed as a millionaire during a government anti-begging drive.
He owns three houses, three rental auto-rickshaws, and a car with a driver. Operating in a busy market, he used his daily alms to fund a secret money-lending business, accumulating significant wealth despite posing as destitute.
Beggar but a wealthy property owner
An anti-begging initiative in Indore uncovered that Mangi Lal was not merely a beggar but a wealthy property owner.
Beyond begging, he ran a money-lending racket for local traders, and his assets included a three-story building, another house, and, ironically, government-allotted accommodation.
Authorities have moved him to a shelter home following the discovery of his extensive assets. The case highlights the issue of organised begging and the misuse of public sympathy.
