MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): In a recent development, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government has announced a public holiday tomorrow, on October 08, 2025.

According to the list issued by the Azad Kashmir Service and the General Administration Department, October 08 has been marked as Youm-e-Istehkam wa Tajdeed-e-Ahd-e-Nau.

All public and private educational institutions will remain closed tomorrow. Earlier, the Government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)  announced the public holidays for the year 2025.

Additionally, special events and prayers will be arranged for the people who lost their lives in the October 08, 2005, earthquake.

The public holiday is announced in memory of earthquake martyrs, coupled with special prayers for the rest of the departed souls of the quake victims in eternal peace, and to express complete solidarity and sympathies with the survivors of the world’s worst natural catastrophe.

Significance of October 08

On October 8, 2005, a devastating earthquake of magnitude 7.6  struck northern Pakistan and the Kashmir region, causing catastrophic loss of life and widespread destruction.
 
The event is often referred to as the 2005 Kashmir earthquake or the Great Pakistan earthquake. Over 86,000 people were killed in Pakistan, including an estimated 19,000 children who died from collapsed school buildings.
 
In neighboring India, over 1,300 people died, and there was one reported death in Afghanistan. More than 69,000 to 75,000 people were injured. An estimated 2.8 to 3.5 million people were left homeless and displaced.
