ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has confirmed that there is significant improvement in internet speeds, which have increased from poor to medium, and 5G technology has also been introduced on 440 towers throughout Pakistan.

While addressing a session of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications, the PTA chairman said that internet speeds have decreased significantly outside Islamabad; however, improvements have been introduced at different parts of the country in order to enhance connectivity.

The chairman mentioned that in his own locality, internet speed was only available up to 1 Mbps, pointing towards the need to update the infrastructure.

In addition to this, the chairman disclosed that 5G technology has been introduced on 440 towers in Pakistan.

Discussing issues faced by the telecom sector in Pakistan, the chairman said that the load shedding hours for electricity in May in Pakistan were about 10 hours, whereas in some cases it was even 18 hours.

For the solution of this problem, he explained that the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a committee that would look into the exemption of telecom towers from load shedding so that mobile and internet services can be ensured to the users throughout the country.

The PTA has been focusing on improving the quality of its network by expanding its network infrastructure and optimizing spectrum allocation in the country.
