LAHORE (Kashmir English): The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is considering launching a six-a-side cricket tournament during the off-season to keep the league active throughout the year and generate additional revenue.
Speaking on the PSL podcast alongside Wasim Akram, PSL Chief Executive Salman Naseer said the proposed event could be named HBL PSL Sixes, although no final decision has been made.
“Several plans are under consideration regarding the new tournament, including a six-player competition on the lines of the Hong Kong Sixes,” he stated.
Naseer said the possibility of making the tournament a regular feature would be assessed. He added that the short-format competition could offer fans exciting cricket and take PSL teams to smaller cities that have not hosted league matches.
He said cricket fans in smaller cities were eager to watch their favourite teams in action, making them potential venues for the proposed event.
The availability of foreign players is expected to be a key challenge in scheduling the tournament. However, the smaller squads and shorter duration could make its administrative and logistical arrangements easier.
The PSL began in 2016, with matches initially held in the United Arab Emirates before gradually moving to Pakistan. Since 2020, all league matches have been played in Pakistan, with Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi serving as host cities.
The PCB has also announced that the PSL will overlap with the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the third consecutive year in 2027. The PSL Governing Council is expected to confirm the schedule, dates and venues for the next edition.
