ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday set the indicative price of wheat at Rs 4,500 per maund for 2027, providing relief to farmers and encouraging an increase in domestic wheat production.

“In view of the increase in production costs, the price had been raised by Rs 1,000 per maund compared to last year,” the statement issued by the Prime Minister Office (PMO) said.

The PM has said that this decision was made with the guidance of President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and the consultation and cooperation of the chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh.

“The decision was aimed at promoting the country’s agricultural sector, protecting the economic interests of farmers, and increasing wheat production next year,” it added.

The statement added that the Prime Minister expressed his special gratitude to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah for their cooperation and valuable suggestions in the consultation process.

The premier said the government’s objective to increase wheat procurement price is to provide relief to farmers in view of rising production costs, higher petroleum prices and inflationary pressures.

“Providing effective incentives to farmers for wheat cultivation is among the primary objectives of the decision,” PM said, expressing hope that the new proposed price will help farmers meet their production costs and earn reasonable profits.

He said the decision is intended to encourage farmers to cultivate wheat by helping them recover their production costs and earn a reasonable profit.

Shehbaz Sharif said farmers had faced financial difficulties in recent years due to inflation and rising agricultural input costs, while Pakistan had also been required to import wheat over the past two years.

“This move by the Prime Minister will prove to be an important milestone in the efforts to improve the economic well-being of farmers, stabilize the agricultural economy, and make the country more self-sufficient in terms of food requirements. It is hoped that 2027 will bring positive results for Pakistan’s agricultural sector and its farmers,” the PMO statement concluded.
