ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Thursday announced that it has selected renowned Pakistani fashion designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, widely known as HSY, to design its new cabin crew uniforms.
The national flag carrier had invited the country’s leading couturiers in Karachi last month to design new uniforms for its crew.
A competitive design showcase was held, where collections from Maheen Khan x Deepak and Fahad, Generation, Ismail Farid, Munib Nawaz, Deepak Perwani, Faraz Manan, HSY, Amir Adnan, and Nomi Ansari were presented.
“The designs were selected based on innovation, high quality, and highlighting the cultural heritage of PIA and Pakistan,” the airline spokesperson said.
The spokesperson further announced that the new uniforms will be unveiled on October 31, marking the maiden flight of PIA’s newly acquired Boeing 787 aircraft.
The Dreamliner’s inaugural flight will take off from London to Islamabad, on which the crew dressed in the new uniforms will welcome the passengers, the spokesperson said.
The statement described the uniforms as “engineered for long-haul durability and ergonomic movement with soft, breathable fabrics [and] structured tailoring.”
PIA’s fashion legacy
PIA has long held a singular tradition of bridging commercial aviation with world-class fashion. In 1966, legendary French designer Pierre Cardin designed PIA’s pioneering A-line tunic and hood, defining aviation chic across the globe.
That heritage was enriched in the 1970s by Queen Elizabeth II’s royal couturier, Sir Hardy Amies, who brought refined tailoring to the skies, followed in recent years by contemporary master Nomi Ansari, whose uniform inspiration lasted for PIA for 12 years.
“Designing for our national flag carrier is about capturing our collective pride and the genuine warmth of Pakistani hospitality,” HSY said.
“We wanted uniforms that our crew feels extraordinarily confident and comfortable in, apparel that respects our heritage, reflects modern fashion, and tells our story beautifully in every airport across the globe,” the designer added.
