ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take decisive action against those responsible for the rising number of attacks on humanitarian workers in conflict zones, calling for sanctions and legal accountability for the perpetrators.
These actions will no longer remain exempt from punishment, according to Ambassador Asim’s statement, who insisted that unaccounted actions lead to justice failure and new violations arise. Ambassador Asim underlined that prompt independent investigations must be supported by impartial frameworks because this will help identify perpetrators who deserve punishment.
He advocated for creating an online tracking system named “global implementation dashboard” to monitor resolution compliance, thus enabling public monitoring of violations analysis and results through real-time updates. The ambassador used data from the Aid Worker Security Database to criticize the increase in attacks on humanitarian workers.
The database documented 379 deaths in 2024 as the most fatalities during one year in history. According to him these attacks proclaim a dangerous active disrespect toward international humanitarian norms since they do not occur at random.
Ambassador Asim demonstrated deep concern for Gaza because, since the October 23 start of Israeli military operations, at least 408 humanitarian workers have died, including 284 staff from the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). He stated that humanitarian workers providing aid to warzone victims deserve safety instead of assaults on their person or operation.
The legal protection of humanitarian workers under international law stands reinforced by UNSC Resolution 2730 according to his perspective. The resolution needed to progress beyond symbolism according to him, because he wanted active measures to achieve its complete execution. The implementation of safety protocols must be incorporated into all UN mission directives, especially when transitions and withdrawals occur.
Pakistan, he said, remains firmly committed to upholding the safety, dignity, and neutrality of humanitarian and UN personnel and supports international efforts to enforce resolution 2730. Ambassador Asim concluded by calling on the international community to match the bravery of humanitarian workers with united and determined action, asserting that doing so is essential to restoring the credibility of the Security Council.
