LAHORE (Kashmir English): Police have arrested former Member of the National Assembly and former PTI Punjab President Hammad Azhar.

According to media reports, Hammad Azhar has been arrested in Multan and handed over to Lahore Police.

Hammad Azhar is involved in various cases related to the incidents of May 9, as per police. According to police, Azhar has been a fugitive since May 9, 2023.

In January 2026, the Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court declared Hammad, along with 7 accused, as proclaimed offenders in the GOR Gate attack case and issued permanent arrest warrants for them.

The court directed the relevant agencies to arrest the proclaimed offenders and present them in court.

Later, in March 2026, in the May 9 GHQ attack case, the Anti-Terrorism Court sentenced 47 proclaimed offenders, including Hammad, to 10 years in prison and fines.

The court’s verdict stated that the accused were charged with arson, vandalism, attacks on police, and damage to government property on May 9.

Hammad Azhar is one of the key leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and was elected as a Member of the National Assembly from the NA-126 constituency of Lahore in the 2018 general elections.

According to police sources, legal action will be taken in the cases related to May 9 after Hammad Azhar is shifted to Lahore.

His arrest has come at a time when court proceedings are underway against several people wanted in the May 9 cases.

It should be noted that cases related to various incidents of May 9 against Hammad Azhar are registered in Lahore and other cities and orders for his arrest had also been issued by the courts.
