ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Islamabad Police said that a main suspect in the case involving student Laiba Ijaz, who allegedly died by suicide after being defrauded, was killed during an exchange of fire between police and unidentified armed men on Tuesday.
The suspect, identified as Muhammad Noman, was injured when armed men opened fire on a police party in the limits of Ramna police station. He later succumbed to his injuries.
A police spokesperson said the suspect was in police custody and was being taken to a location for recovery of evidence after his identification and alleged involvement in the case.
Four accomplices riding two motorcycles had concealed themselves along the route and opened indiscriminate fire on the police team in an apparent attempt to free the suspect, the spokesperson added.
The statement added that Noman was injured by gunfire fired by his own accomplices. Police personnel remained safe due to their bulletproof jackets and other security measures.
The injured suspect was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries, he said.
The spokesperson added that search operations are underway to arrest the suspect’s other accomplices.
Noman was accused in the case of visa fraud involving a 20-year-old Laiba Ijaz, a student at International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), who committed suicide within the limits of Ramna Police Station.
Police said that Laiba had been defrauded of Rs5 million, which she had paid to move to the United States for further studies. An agent had handed her the travel documents that were later found to be fake, the FIR stated.
The judicial magistrate had granted the police physical remand of the suspect last week.
