ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Pakistan has told India that it cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Water Treaty.

In a letter written to India regarding the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty by the neighbouring country, Secretary Water Syed Ali Murtaza told his Indian counterpart that India’s action of suspending the Indus Waters Treaty is illegal.

According to sources, the letter states that there is no clause for unilaterally suspending the Indus Water Treaty of 1960, adding that the words used in the Indian letter regarding suspension of the treaty don’t exist anywhere in the treaty.

The letter stated that Pakistan considers the Indus Water Treaty to be in its original form, and there is no room for any change in the Indus Water Treaty unilaterally.

WB rejects Indian stance on Indus Water Treaty

The World Bank has also rejected the Indian stance regarding the suspension of the Treaty between the two countries.

According to government sources, Pakistan has not formally requested for negotiations on the Indus Water Treaty, rather, it has expressed willingness to negotiate the issue according to the framework of the Indus Water Treaty at India’s request.

Sources said that the impression spread by the Indian media that Pakistan has made an appeal for the talks is completely baseless.
