ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Following the increase in petroleum product prices, goods transporters have announced a 5% increase in freight charges across the country.
President of the Goods Transporters Association, Malik Shahzad Awan, strongly condemned the hike in petroleum prices and termed the government’s decision to revise fuel prices on a daily basis unacceptable.
He called on the government to immediately withdraw the decision, saying frequent changes in fuel prices were creating difficulties for the transport sector.
Malik Shahzad Awan said the nationwide strike by goods transporters had been postponed for 40 days following assurances from the government. However, he added that most of the transporters’ demands were still pending.
He warned that if significant progress was not made on their demands within the stipulated period, goods transporters would once again launch a nationwide strike.
The transporters said the increase in petroleum prices had raised operating costs and left them with no option but to revise freight charges.
