DHEERKOT (Kashmir English): A 12-year-old child died of suffocation while his parents and a brother became unconscious in a coal-heated room in Dheerkot of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
According to details, the family had burned coal in a closed room to ward off cold that led to a tragic incident, resulting in the death of a 12-year-old child.
According to the police, the unfortunate incident occurred in Kallas Paje, a suburban area of Dheerkot, where a person named Nadeem resided with his family. Due to the severe cold, the family lit a coal heater inside the room and closed the doors.
Soon after, the room filled with poisonous gas, causing all four individuals in the house to become unconscious. Upon receiving information about the incident, locals immediately rushed to the scene, broke down the door, and brought out the affected individuals.
During the rescue, it was discovered that the 12-year-old child had already died on the spot due to suffocation, while the father Nadeem, his wife, and another son were in a state of severe unconsciousness.
After initial first aid, all three were referred in critical condition to a major hospital in Muzaffarabad, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
Police confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred due to lack of oxygen and the emission of poisonous gas. Police and district administration have appealed to citizens to avoid using coal, braziers, or other burning fuels in closed rooms during winter and to ensure proper ventilation to prevent such tragic incidents.
