KARACHI (Kashmir English): Former Finance Minister and Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, Dr Shamshad Akhtar, passed away.
According to the report, his funeral prayers will be offered in Karachi tomorrow after Zuhr prayers.
Dr. Shamshad Akhtar assumed office as the 14th Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan on January 2, 2006.
She was the first female Governor of the State Bank. She had extensive national and international banking experience.
Before she was appointed Governor State Bank, she was associated with the Asian Development Bank as Director General, Southeast Asia Department, and had been working in this position since January 2004.
Earlier, she was the Deputy Director General of this department. She also held the position of Director, Administration, Finance and Trade Division for East and Central Asia at the Asian Development Bank.
Born in Hyderabad, Shamshad Akhtar received her early education in Karachi and Islamabad.
She completed her BA in Economics in 1974 from the University of the Punjab and her MSc in Economics from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad.
She completed her MA in Development Economics from the University of Sussex in 1977 and her PhD in Economics from Paisley College of Technology, UK, in 1980.
She is a Fulbright Scholar (Postdoctoral Fellowship) and was a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Economics at Harvard University in 1987.
Dr. Shamshad Akhtar has presented several papers on economics and finance at international conferences/seminars/symposia.
Her research interests include monetary and fiscal policy, banking and capital markets, international financial structure, regulation and supervision, and industrial and corporate restructuring.
